The ARTEMIS  Embedded Computing Systems Initiative has a strong focus on embedded computing systems, is funding two projects relevant to ASCENs: eDIANA and iLAND.

eDIANA

Embedded Systems for Energy Efficient Buildings (2009 – 2012)

eDIANA is addressing the need for achieving energy efficiency in buildings. Using innovative solutions based on embedded systems, eDIANA focusses on enabling sustainable urban life through efficient use of resources while increasing comfort in urban environments. Through the deployment of inter-operating embedded systems in residential and non-residential buildings, eDIANA aims for a better control of energy provisioning and increased situation awareness. With such a practical focus, the eDIANA project could become one of several projects that will benefit from the deep and foundational understanding of self-aware and adaptive service component ensembles, and the insights in engineering and best practices that ASCENS will produce and disseminate.

iLAND

Middleware for Deterministic Dynamically Reconfigurable Networked Embedded Systems (2009 – 2012)

iLAND focusses on developing a modular component-based middleware for inbuilding infrastructured networks of embedded systems. The goal of iLAND is to improve flexibility, scalability, and composability of such systems. In comparison to iLAND, ASCENS focusses on a) gaining a deep formal understanding of adaptivity, self-awareness and dynamic self-expression, and b) how the facilities offered by such middlewares can be leveraged to their full potential by using concepts of self-awareness and dynamic self-expression.

In the FP7 embedded systems design research area, two projects pursue research activities with potential overlap with ASCENS: The ArtistDesign Network of Excellence, and the STREP project COMBEST. The possible interactions between these two projects and ASCENS are detailed in the following.
